--High school visitation workshop ideas

APRIL 10, Friday, start workshops ~10AM

Need people to: Sign up to help with individual workshops – ceramics, printmaking, drawing, color/painting, and possibly others (see possible extra workshops).

Workshops will last 1 hour to 1 hour, 30 minutes, lead by members of the LCCSAA.

If you have a theme for a workshop or are willing to lead one, please write a description and material list with cost estimate / price of materials to be submitted. All material costs will be covered by the art department. Please have these emailed in BY NEXT FRIDAY, MARCH 20. Instructors will likely be willing to help if asked, if nothing else for yelling purposes.

Jennifer Salzman has any additional information (in charge?)

In previous years there have been 20-30 high school students per workshop.
Having student examples of work in each medium taught would be great. Please start thinking about work you might be able to bring in.

A release form needs to be signed for any work displayed!

Extra workshop ideas – Fibers (felting, quilting, collage), Multimedia (slideshow, contact Theresa Hughes or Rick Sims to collect student work to present in gallery as students filter in), demonstrations in wood and metals.

Workshop ideas

Ceramics – Amelia, talk with Stacie Joe do figurative and hand building techniques

Drawing-mediums… white-black-neutral grey papers with colors
Color – color mixing, color theory
Printmaking – examples, demonstrations – collograph, cardboard

Guide sheet to show examples of what you’ll be making, description, what time, place

--What do you want from the new art department?

The LCCSAA will present these ideas directly to the board, increasing the chances of them being put through! Demands should be specific.

Current list: Student lounge space, Student Art Association room / closet , room for No Cash Clothing Stash, good lighting

Need to find out how to get onto board’s agenda (Sage, ask Mary Jo)

Not concrete that new art department will be getting building 10, but if we present ideas to the board, our chances will increase

--Peace Conference art submissions

Conference interested in displaying peace-oriented artwork. Please submit work!

Conference is in May

Stan Taylor, the Lane Peace Center Chair, is heading the event.
More details to come.

--Name change

The LCCSAA will now be known as the Lane Art Student Association (LASA).

Email, blog, etc will be updated to reflect the name change during spring break.

Name is still open to change if you have any CATCHY acronyms you’d like to toss out.

--Meeting time change for spring term

First Friday of the spring term, April 3rd, 1PM

After 1st meeting, send out email asking what is the best time for people (Sage)

Please help spread by announcing this in class!

Satoko is available Fridays.

Still need to find out when JS Bird is available.

Many art students do not have class on Fridays, is it advisable to have meetings then? May draw more in or lower the numbers. Having a lunch time might be good too, so people can eat their lunch while attending the meeting.

Activities

No immediate group activities planned, more next term.

Discussion

--Display cases for new gallery spaces

Mildred is still in discussion with Susan Loudermilk and the Art on Campus Committee. We have been asked to come up with 3 alternative spaces besides Building 1 that we would like to display artwork.

Council of clubs has on agenda discussing funds request for display cases week 2 spring term. They seemed very optimistic about our project to increase visitor / student exposure to art.

Include in proposal that: The art displayed will aid in the learning atmosphere. The display cases will be used for a very long time.

Is it feasible to build our own? – Would take a lot of time that people don’t necessarily have.

Cost according to Sharlene ranges from $400 - $1200 for museum grade cases with interior lighting. Do not necessarily need interior lighting though… Sage has found Curio display cases ranging from $100 - $300 that look just as professional if not better. Could be found on Craigslist, but we want cases that are aesthetically pleasing.

May want to buy locally as to avoid the $100+ price for shipping. What stores carry curios?

Cases should be easily moveable.

Possible places for gallery space: Building 1/Building 19, Center Building, conferences… Cannot put display cases in narrow areas with regard to being safety hazards.

--Supply closet

Need a supply closet for donated supplies – faculty meeting room is not ideal.

Amelia has many things to donate.

Maybe we could use the room all the looms are stored in?

--Bulletin board

Acquired, now waiting for the work order to be processed (… unfortunately these can take months. We will harass them though, and hopefully have them comply within a week or two).

Term calendar on bulletin board – write scholarship deadlines, meeting times, events

Print out copy of meeting notes

--Announce LCCSAA meetings in classes

Word of mouth is powerful for getting people to come to meetings!

--LCC gallery listing creation

LCCSAA should create listing of existing galleries / art on campus so people can find

Team up with Geo Pax, the recycling coordinator, to further understanding of recycling
Possibility of mold forming / smell from garbage-art – only use relatively clean items?

-First Friday art walk

-Get together and do art show in town
Have to pre-register months in advance
Maybe ask around and get hosted at a new or unconventional spot?
Sign up for 3 or 4 venues so we can stagger times throughout the year we have gallery space in town
When signing up for venue, sign up for one name, but be sure to mention that more than one person is involved, AKA, the LCCSAA
Bring has gallery space for artwork made from recycled materials
MECCA also has gallery space like Bring for recycled artwork
MECCA allows people to teach a craft they know to others

-Saturday Market Booth for LCCSAA members
Maybe too difficult and costly

Art on Campus Committee – have to ask them where we can display
Make history / journal of putting together piece, recording time taken as well so that people don’t feel art is daunting

-Interactive art demonstration / guided learning sessions in booth at Center Building
Demonstrate different mediums

-Lane Night
High school students come interested in LCC, we could set up a gallery for them featuring different mediums
Feb 10th, 8:30AM – 12PM at Fairgrounds
We should get everything together the day before and have someone in charge of getting pieces there
Easels needed
Feature print, fiber, metal, clay, photography, drawing, stone, painting student works

-Create handout with teacher biographies, what classes they offer
Would make approaching teachers or asking questions of them easier and less daunting

-Broaden perception of what people consider art
Describe artwork meaning/purpose
Monthly table in center building where art in presented

-SAA bulletin board creation for announcements or presenting work
One in Center building and one in Fine Arts building
Amelia has a spare board to donate

-Create art resource library
In art faculty room: books, tools, magazines, guides, etc
Online: links to galleries, tutorials, e-books, etc.
