Announcements

--High school visitation workshop ideas

APRIL 10, Friday, start workshops ~10AM

Need people to: Sign up to help with individual workshops – ceramics, printmaking, drawing, color/painting, and possibly others (see possible extra workshops).

Workshops will last 1 hour to 1 hour, 30 minutes, lead by members of the LCCSAA.

If you have a theme for a workshop or are willing to lead one, please write a description and material list with cost estimate / price of materials to be submitted. All material costs will be covered by the art department. Please have these emailed in BY NEXT FRIDAY, MARCH 20. Instructors will likely be willing to help if asked, if nothing else for yelling purposes.

Jennifer Salzman has any additional information (in charge?)

In previous years there have been 20-30 high school students per workshop.
Having student examples of work in each medium taught would be great. Please start thinking about work you might be able to bring in.

A release form needs to be signed for any work displayed!

Extra workshop ideas – Fibers (felting, quilting, collage), Multimedia (slideshow, contact Theresa Hughes or Rick Sims to collect student work to present in gallery as students filter in), demonstrations in wood and metals.

Workshop ideas

Ceramics – Amelia, talk with Stacie Joe do figurative and hand building techniques

Drawing-mediums… white-black-neutral grey papers with colors
Color – color mixing, color theory
Printmaking – examples, demonstrations – collograph, cardboard

Guide sheet to show examples of what you’ll be making, description, what time, place

--What do you want from the new art department?

The LCCSAA will present these ideas directly to the board, increasing the chances of them being put through! Demands should be specific.

Current list: Student lounge space, Student Art Association room / closet , room for No Cash Clothing Stash, good lighting

Need to find out how to get onto board’s agenda (Sage, ask Mary Jo)

Not concrete that new art department will be getting building 10, but if we present ideas to the board, our chances will increase

--Peace Conference art submissions

Conference interested in displaying peace-oriented artwork. Please submit work!

Conference is in May

Stan Taylor, the Lane Peace Center Chair, is heading the event.
More details to come.

--Name change

The LCCSAA will now be known as the Lane Art Student Association (LASA).

Email, blog, etc will be updated to reflect the name change during spring break.

Name is still open to change if you have any CATCHY acronyms you’d like to toss out.

--Meeting time change for spring term

First Friday of the spring term, April 3rd, 1PM

After 1st meeting, send out email asking what is the best time for people (Sage)

Please help spread by announcing this in class!

Satoko is available Fridays.

Still need to find out when JS Bird is available.

Many art students do not have class on Fridays, is it advisable to have meetings then? May draw more in or lower the numbers. Having a lunch time might be good too, so people can eat their lunch while attending the meeting.

Activities

No immediate group activities planned, more next term.

Discussion

--Display cases for new gallery spaces

Mildred is still in discussion with Susan Loudermilk and the Art on Campus Committee. We have been asked to come up with 3 alternative spaces besides Building 1 that we would like to display artwork.

Council of clubs has on agenda discussing funds request for display cases week 2 spring term. They seemed very optimistic about our project to increase visitor / student exposure to art.

Include in proposal that: The art displayed will aid in the learning atmosphere. The display cases will be used for a very long time.

Is it feasible to build our own? – Would take a lot of time that people don’t necessarily have.

Cost according to Sharlene ranges from $400 - $1200 for museum grade cases with interior lighting. Do not necessarily need interior lighting though… Sage has found Curio display cases ranging from $100 - $300 that look just as professional if not better. Could be found on Craigslist, but we want cases that are aesthetically pleasing.

May want to buy locally as to avoid the $100+ price for shipping. What stores carry curios?

Cases should be easily moveable.

Possible places for gallery space: Building 1/Building 19, Center Building, conferences… Cannot put display cases in narrow areas with regard to being safety hazards.

--Supply closet

Need a supply closet for donated supplies – faculty meeting room is not ideal.

Amelia has many things to donate.

Maybe we could use the room all the looms are stored in?

--Bulletin board

Acquired, now waiting for the work order to be processed (… unfortunately these can take months. We will harass them though, and hopefully have them comply within a week or two).

Term calendar on bulletin board – write scholarship deadlines, meeting times, events

Print out copy of meeting notes

--Announce LCCSAA meetings in classes

Word of mouth is powerful for getting people to come to meetings!

--LCC gallery listing creation

LCCSAA should create listing of existing galleries / art on campus so people can find

UPCOMING EVENTS

-Movie / Collaborative Art Project / Potluck

Friday, February 20, 2009, 4PM in the LCC art department gallery

Still not sure what we’ll show, so if you have any suggestions please send them in. Something artsy, but not necessarily a documentary. The LCC and Eugene libraries have a good selection of films to choose from, can someone scour something from one of those?
Bring a bowl, eating utensil, and art implements, though some will be available if forgotten. Food and a pillow might also be nice (pillow because of possible seating issues, we have 20 chairs, but who knows what will happen; we can probably borrow chairs from an unused classroom though).

After the movie we’ll do a collaborative piece of some kind, maybe an exquisite corpse? Logo drawing? Start a drawing and pass it to the next person in a circle? Suggestions welcome.
Suggested films: Rezfest, Art21

Talked about doing this every other week, possibly on changing times and days, though Friday is a dead day in the art department. Projector just needs to be reserved by one of the group’s advisers the week of the movie showing, and the gallery needs to be reserved with Jenny Sulzman.

-Lane Preview Night

March 4, 2009, 6PM

The event starts at 6PM with an information fair. Once again, having examples of student artwork either physical or photographed would be great. I’ll put a stack of waiver forms in the art faculty room (end of second hallway in building 11 right before blue chairs) with an example filled out – just need your name, signature, and the date if submitting the original work. Again, please include the class you made the piece in and the instructor’s name.

Free gallery t-shirts for students who help out at the event! Email Sage3639@hotmail.com if you can.

-Denali is seeking submissions!

Denali deadline for the Spring 2009 issue is April 10th, 2009 at 5PM! For more information visit Denali’s website at http://www.lanecc.edu/denali/

-High School LCC Visitation

April 10th, 2009

We have been asked to take charge of an interactive art workshop for high school students, ideas and suggestions for the workshop(s) are much appreciated!

We need a ceramic project (usually just giving students a chance to play on the wheels), a printmaking project, a drawing project and a color/painting project.

Suggested workshop ideas: Minimalist, charcoal; Many different mediums to experiment with; Cloth / Wool dying.

Other suggestions: Give tour of art building; Have artwork created from various art departments/classes there in workshop.

Keep in mind: Materials will be paid for by school; We have to clean up whatever mess is made; We will have students for an hour to an hour and a half; Minimal might be best with possible short attention spans

-JS Bird show opening

Corvallis at the Art Center, Thursday, February 19, 5-7PM

-World Café open mic with collaborative painting

Every Tuesday, 7-11PM (or later)

Some really great jam sessions that go on here, with a huge canvas to freely paint on (paints and brushes supplied).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

-LCCSAA mail/drop box

Located in the art department’s general office room (second door on the right). It’s the one in the lower right corner, labeled LCCSAA on the inside. We appreciate notes and surprises and things we ask for put in here, unless malicious.

-LCCSAA website!

http://LCC-SAA.blogspot.com

-Blue lounge chairs / New art department ideas!

Many have expressed a dislike for the chairs being located in front of the bathrooms, and want to swap them with the pedestals. Mary Jo has explained that due to past vandalism of the pedestals, the wall protrusion was built to hide them, and making the swap would destroy that safety cove.
She sympathized with us and said that space is very limited in the art department, faculty feel the crunch as well.
Mary Jo has suggested that members of the LCCSAA attend the open meetings for the development of the new art department. There, we can ask for student space – perhaps even one specifically designated for the LCCSAA. Let your voice be heard! Officers could act as representatives for the student body on what they would like to see happen. Email in your ideas for what the new art department should contain and we will take them to the discussion table.

-Collecting photographs of student artwork!

Please email them in to LCCSAA@gmail.com, put them in our mailbox, or ask Sage to photograph the work by emailing him at Sage.Liskey@gmail.com

At the very least, please include the class you created the work in and the instructor’s name. Mediums used and some brief description of the project guidelines would be good too. These will be used at events to expose prospective students to the arts of Lane Community College.

-Collecting art resources (books, supplies, paper, references, etc).

Please put them in the LCCSAA mailbox, or directly into the art faculty room. Do not donate trash!

-Constitution has been okayed by group members

Now it needs to be reviewed by the administration that handles new groups. Tentatively we will become official on the 23rd of February.

QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS

-Art show deadlines?

LCC Student Art Show – Sometime in April? Juried by professionals.

League of innovation competition – juried by faculty

-New art building meetings

When are the meetings and who will express opinions regarding what students need in the new building? Maybe we should collect written statements.

OTHER TOPICS OF CONVERSATION

-Lane County Youth Career Fair
Thanks everyone who submitted work! It was a big success and a lot of people are excited about attending lane.

-Billboard

Someone needs to talk to Amelia about the size of the billboard she offered to donate. Suggested position of the billboard is above the drinking fountain next to the bathrooms.

Everything that goes onto the billboard should be signed and dated by the department, specifically relating to the LCCSAA (no general stuff), and removed once under expiration.

A suggestion box will be put onto the billboard for anyone with comments or suggestions or what have you.

-Art faculty meeting room needs to be reserved prior to use.

-LCCSAA weekly meetings

With or without administrators to touch basis with. 5 hours a term is very limited.

Perhaps have officer meetings without voting?

As we begin to handle more tasks and events, we will need to set aside time to prepare for them.

-Logo - Do we want branding?

JS Bird knows a student excellent with logos, though may not want to do a commission.

Could have a logo drawing party and just have everyone sit down and produce ideas.

Logos are good for catching the eyes of people, it’s how advertising works.

-Should we change our name?

An acronym that can be said as a word would be better. Satoko has suggested “Lane Association of Student Artists” (LASA). We’d have to change all of our web-established names though upon making the change. LCCSAA is already established in peoples’ minds though.

Meeting Notes - January 30, 2009

ANNOUNCEMENTS

-First Friday ArtWalk Feb 6, 2009, hosted by Kate Ali, instructor at LCC. Tour begins at 5:30PM at Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center followed by stops at White Lotus Gallery, Fenario Gallery, Harlequin Beads and Jewelry, and New Zone Gallery.

-Lane County Youth Career Fair
Feb 10th 8:30AM – 12PM at the Fairgrounds
This is a good opportunity to expose high school students to the wide range of mediums taught at Lane Community College. If interested in displaying work, please reply with details on the size and medium - there is limited space so I'd like to sort out getting as many different mediums as possible on one table. I'll get back to you with more details.

QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS

-Do we want to change our name from LCC Student Art Association?
A professional sounding name is good for validity
Something unique that stands out might be good
If a new name is chosen, Student Art Association should be kept as a subtitle name

-Are LCC Student groups considered non-profit?

-Can students keep money made from artwork sold through SAA galleries?

WEB SPACE

-Facebook, I’ve since looked at Facebook and as you can’t have a simple URL, am deciding against it
-Google Group, seems like it would be the best means of creating a real mailing list / discussion area for members
-I’ve looked into separate image hosting more and found out it’s gotten a bit better. Leaning toward a blog now with links on the side to specific entries that detail members’ works / biographies and specific events.

GROUP ADVERTISING

-Several outlets for doing this free including the Torch, and the LCC Radio Station
-Torch wants to do an article about LCCSAA and interview several members.
-We can have our own designation number for making photocopies

CONSTITUTION
-Mission Statement
The LCCSAA functions to promote an appreciation and understanding of the arts and provide enriching activities for building a strong artist community.
Promoting an appreciation + understanding of the arts + broadening the art community + providing an outlet for the enrichment of the arts

-Satako suggested that officers work on the constitution together separately, then present it to the members and get feedback and get it ratified.

ACTIVITIES AND ACTIVITY IDEAS

-Activities should be separated into groupings of those requiring money and those not requiring money, then prioritized so we can keep a realistic agenda for the term

-Create study body collaborative art piece outside or in center building
Have booth
Anyone can participate
Use garbage (materials LCC does not recycle)
Team up with Geo Pax, the recycling coordinator, to further understanding of recycling
